Sevkabel Port
Designing a multi-agent model based on a creative cluster
In 2019, as part of the research on revitalized areas of industrial urban belts, the ITMO Institute of Design and Urbanism developed a way to study the material environment of sites in order to transform them into creative clusters. In cooperation with the Quality of Urban Life Laboratory (QULAB) and the managing organization Sevkabel Port (Factory of Events), architect and urbanist Nikita Popov created a model that describes the interaction between the concept of a creative cluster and its material environment through the social life of the space.
Project name: Sevkabel Port
Location: Saint Petersburg, Russia
Client: Factory of Events
Project Type: Public space of the creative cluster
To build the model, a method of multi-agent simulation was proposed, which allowed to collect virtual social statistics about the space. It is possible to obtain similar data in real life using classical methods of sociology, but it is difficult for objects in the early stage of development or in the green field. The work on the model was supervised by Alexandra Nenko, a doctoral student in sociology.
Comparison of the final modeling variants with the QULAB sociological-marketing forecast showed a high degree of correlation of 91%.
The report with statistical data was accepted by Sevkabel Port management company and used for internal analytics.
The correspondence between the problem areas of visitor traffic at the site and in the model was noted.
In turn, the Institute of Urbanism and Design acquired a working version of the model describing public spaces of similar typology, as well as materials for future research. The main idea in creating the model is its scalability and applicability for different objects, with increasing potential for accuracy.
